Santiago was a different kind of a fisherman. He loved to struggle hard in order to achieve his target. He was a simple poor old man. He never dreamed of spending his life like an ordinary man. He was thin and lean. The wrinkles on his face looked like the waves of the sea. His eyes were bright. They were full of hope and courage. He was a strange old man, whose eyes were always new. Even turtling could not harm his eyes. He called himself a strange old man. His ideas and personality displayed a difference with the other fishermen. He was more intelligent and the skilled old fisherman. Unlike other, he was always hopeful. Everyday was a new day for him. He loved the sea, newspapers, and dreams and the birds. The blotches on his face made him more different than others. His knowledge of the sea and search for the big fish could be admired by everyman. He knew well the movement of the water and messages of the sea.
His fishing skill was also great, but his luck had defeat. That's why, he passed through failure of many days, but he did not suspect his own fishing skill. He said, "It is better to be lucky".

Santiago got up early in the morning on the 85th day of his failure and went to the sea. The boy also helped him by carrying harpoon, gaff, and the lines. The old man took mast on his shoulders. The boy bought him the sardines and the baits. When the Old man was searching for the big fish, he was rowing his boat steadily. As he moved to achieved his target, he faced many problems. He saw the birds struggling for the achievement of their target.
He also saw a Manwar bird diving and catching the flying fish. Then, he was lost in self communication. Suddenly, a soft pull at the line took him out of all the forgetfulness and state of considertaion. He recognized Marlin that seemed to him take the fruits of his long labour. He expected to take it out before the sunset. That seemed to be the call of good luck.

The sea in "The Old man and the Sea" has many roles and plays an important part in shaping the destiny and different characters of the novel. Its influences on all the charcters of this novel are prominent. All the fishermen of "Havana" have attached many hopes to sea. It provides shelter to the fish, but they are always at risk. In symbolic sense, sea stands for the world. Sea is also like a woman who is sometimes so happy, but the other she is too angry. Sea also performs the role of a mother. When it is happy, it gives the fishermen many fish. When it is angry, it fails them in their struggle to catch any fish.
Sea is also like a teacher. It teaches the people how to live with patience and courage. However, sea has great importance in this novel. Sea is the Santiago od the natural world. It cannot be defeated by other natural forces, just man can defeat. So did Santiago brought marlin out of its lap.

People believe that events in the man's life bring good or bad luck. Santiago gives equal importance to all the days and nights. He fights against the irony of fate. He fails for 84 days, yet he plans to struggle hard. Turtling is not something dangerous for him. The main object of his life to fight and prove man's worth in this panorama of life. Even many days failure may not stop him working hard. He catches the big fish and proves that man's hard work always brings forth good results for him.

When "Santiago" caught Marlin, its blood attaracted many sharks. Santiago started fighting against them. The first shark Mako came and it injured the useful part of Marlin. Santiago said, 'But man is not made for defeat'. "A man can be destroyed not defeated". After two hours, two more sharks came and he said, "Ay" and got up. He killed the sharks with his knife and also used oar. He wished it had been a dream. In this way, the old man lost his knife, oar, spear and gaff. He said, "I will them until I die".
After all sharks came in a pack. He also lost his club his tiller broke. At last , he ignored them and reached the shore with the skeleton of the big fish.

Marlin is the name of the fish that lives deep down in the sea. It takes the bait in its mouth and swallows it after a long time. It is bigger than the boat. It is dignified inhabitant of the sea. It is very strong. The old man is much impressed by its bravery, dignity and beauty. The old man is afraid of its jeck. He says, 'I love you and respect you very much but I shall kill you before this day ends'. Old man kills marlin because he is a fisherman. He kills the fish for pride, so that he should be called the champion.
He says, I killed marlin in self-defence. He wants to remove the slur of being called an unlucky man by the people.Santiago was the fisherman by profession, but he did not like to catch the small fish. He let them grow and enjoy their life. Even he took pity upon Marlin, but what would he say others and keep them silent. He catches Marlin uttering very sweet sentences.
